INTRODUCTION TO GYPSUM – VERMICULITE PLASTER

Gypsum Vermiculite Plaster is manufactured by using Pure Mineral Gypsum , Having high purity of calcium sulphate obtain from mines. It is washed, treated, calcined at std. specific temperature, pulverized to find mesh, sieved & hardening, strengthen compounds & are added to give final product,    packed   in 25 Kg packing.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF VERMICULITE :-
Vermiculite is micaceous mineral that exfoliates when heated or subjected certain chemicals reactions . It is basically hydrated magnesium – Aluminum – Iron Silicate.
Bulk density = 0.21Gms/cubic Cms, Absorption of water, 5 times its weight of water & chemically highly inert material totally non – combustible, Thermal insulating material.

TECHNICAL SUPERIORITY  :

Area of Application

·         Internal bare brick walls
·         Hollow concrete blocks
·         Concrete columns
·         R. R. C. ceilings
·         Shiperox block work
·         Goa blocks etc.

Feature & Advantages

It can be directly applied on the above mention Area of Applications, so there is no need of cement plaster & POP / Neeru Finished etc.

Free from inherent shrinkage cracking, low density, no curing, and no fungus, provide smooth surface, holds nails & other fittings, all normal decoration etc.

INFINITE LIFE
Gypsum plaster contains no dangerous chlorides. It retains its composition for thousands of years as testified by the construction of the Cheops Pyramids

ABSENCE OF SHRINKAGE CRACKING
Gypsum plasters do not shrink (unlike cement) during the drying out and hardening process.

INSULATION PROPERTIES
Gypsum plasters have low conductivity and good thermal properties, ensuring energy and power saving. Tested in accordance to BS 874:1973. Appendix - C, Class "A" in accordance to DIN 4102. The thermal conductivity is 0.32 W/mK.
`

FLEXURAL TENSIL STRENGTH
Gypsum plasters exhibit high tensile and flexural strength. They are less prone to cracking or debonding due to thermal, tensil and shearing movement of the background.

NON-TOXIC AND ANTI-FUNGUS
Gypsum plasters will not harbour insects or nourish mould growth or fungi. They pose no health hazards and are therefore frequently specified in hospitals and clinics. They are gentle on the skin and offer a clean, healthy environment.

NO CURING REQUIRED
Gypsum plasters require no water curing and should be permitted to dry out as quickly as possible. A definite advantage considering the weather conditions in the Tropical Country like India

FIRE INHIBITOR
Gypsum is non-combustible (inert), designated class ‘O’ in a accordance to BS 476:4:1970, and contains a high content of crystal water. In the event of fire, will act as a barrier and will protect the blockwork, concrete
and steel.

ACOUSTIC PROPERTIES
Gypsum (calcium sulphate) as a binder is used in the manufacture of acoustic tiles and plasters, a contributory factor to the absorption of air-borne sounds.

 BONDING PROPERTIES
Due to the nature and structure of gypsum, it exhibits excellent bonding properties: hence is applied in a single coat on R.C.C. ceilings, Internal Bare-Brick walls, Hallow Concrete Blocks and Concrete Columns.

RUST INHIBITOR
The Gypsum blended the gypsum plaster is the perfect rust preventive agent and inhibits corrosion of electric metal fittings, pips, etc. Metal lathings embedded in gypsum plaster will not corrode or rust. Serves durable life-long.

EASE OF APPLICATION
International gypsum plasters are pre-mixed and available in easy to handle bags. Only the addition of water is required. A single coat application suffices in most situations resulting in less wastage of time, labour and material. Semi-skilled masons can be taught how to apply and achieve excellent finishes within a few hours on site.

AESTHESTICS
Gypsum plasters provide a smooth interior finish for ceilings and walls, and is ideal background for good quality paints and wall paper finishes.

Comparision of Sand Cement Plaster and Gypsum Plaster.

SAND CEMENT PLASTER

GYPSUM PLASTER
1.
The Mixure of the sand and cement has to       be made at the site in different ratios a    difficult process that requires contstant monitoring.

Contact monitoring not required. The plaster is ready mix of gypsum, Perlite, Vermiculite and additives Effort & Time saved.
2.
It is not ready mix plaster and hence    variation in mixing can occure. Backgrounds.

Specially formulated ready mix plaster for most type of solid. No variation.
3.
Sand is used an aggregate.

Exofoliated vermaculite acts as aggregate that helps in attaining better coverage and good thermal insulation.
4.
After sand cement plaster, POP punning is required for better surface finish.

Substitute Two-application cement plaster & POP punning. Provides smooth surface finish in one application better then POP.
5.
Pre-curing and post-curing is necessary.

No pre- curing & post-curing is required. Thus saves time and wastage of water.
6.
Setting time varies from 60-120 minutes.

Graduated setting time (30-50 min.) to enhance easy workability.
7.
Development of water cracks is quite frequent.

No shrinkage cracks once set & provides crack free smooth surface.
8.
High percentage of wastage during application.

Nominal wastage during application.
9.
Rough finish is obtained.

Very smooth fine finish surface is obtained.
10.
It leaves water patch marks behind.

No patch marks can be observed once it is set & dry.
11.
Very messy.

Not at all messy.
12.
Used for bricks, blocks, concrete walls & and rigid background directly.

Used for bricks, blocks, concrete walls & any rigid background directly.
13.
Time consuming process hence more labour cost involved.

Time saving process, thus less labour cost.
14.
Multiple brands are available in the market hance quality varies.

One branded product hance one is always assured quality.

SAVINGS TIPS TO USE OF VERMICULITE PLASTER
·         The background to be plastered  should  be thoroughly brushed with broom to remove  dust and loose  mortar on the existing wall surface
·         For ceilings, it is most important   that the concrete slab should be clean, dry and free from mould oil
·         It is adviceable to wet the wall and ceiling surface,to achieve good workability.
·         Always mix powder to water and not water to powder, and powder should be thoroughly mixed with water and should be free from limps and foreign material before use.
·         Normal consistency or water plaster ratio of the plaster should be 0.65-0.70 I e for 1000grams of powder 650-700 grams of water, is recommend for better performance.
·         Always back-fold bag after taking out the material to keep it free from moisture and atmosphere.
·         Only the required material should be prepared,as per the area of application is ready to plaster
·         Set plaster shortens the setting time and thus reduces the workability.
·          Do not add water  to delay the setting time, after the initial setting  time is completed, as the material will loose its bonding properties and strength.
·         Suggest that plaster of Paris masons to do good workmanship as compared to pop works.
·         For top coat after applying of  Gypsum vermiculite plaster, a thin coat  of same material should be prepared, in paste form and should be applied by using  putty blade to provide a smooth finish, do not apply water brush on the finished surface
·         Bags should be stored in Dry place, and free from water, after using the powder from the bag, the incomplete bag should be tied and closed.
·         After complete drying (, which depends on the thickness of the plaster applied), usually 3-4 Days, The surface can be painted with any water soluble paint, such as emulsion paint, except cement paint.
·          The thickness of the plaster can be maintained from 3mm to 15mm
